Avery SINGER

Born in 1987, Avery Singer lives and works in New York.

Usually in black, white and grey, her painting shows how the aesthetic of digital art is affecting the way we view the subject but that it has not totally swept away notions of the sensuousness and tradition in figuration. First, he  uses an airbrush to spread geometric illustrations onto canvas, which she has composed using the open-source 3D software SketchUp, a favorite among designers and architects. Manually enlarging these imaginary, gridded interiors into paintings makes the figurative subjects depicted grotesque. Then, her manual interventions underpins shades of grey and bring the finesse derived from the tradition of classical painting.

Her work has enjoyed remarkable institutional recognition years, with solo exhibitions (ICA Miami, Fondation Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Turin, Musée Ludwig Cologne…), biennials (Venice, Lyon, New York) and public collections in Europe (Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam) and America (MoMA, Whitney, Guggenheim, the Met & Hammer Museum).
