Simon HANTAI (1922 \u2013 2008)<\/h3>\n

Simon Hanta\u00ef was born in Hungary and graduated from the Budapest School of Fine Art, before moving to Paris in 1949. Initially attracted to Surrealism, he broke off from the group in 1955 after a dispute with Andr\u00e9 Breton related to Jackson Pollock\u2019s action painting.<\/p>\n

In 1959, Simon Hanta\u00ef launched into his Pliages<\/em>: these works involved the artist folding or knotting his canvases before painting large blocks of color on them, which would create unpredictable patterns of color and blank reserves once they were unfolded.<\/p>\n

In the 1960s, he developed his abstract paintings in sets and series: Mariales<\/em>(1960-1968), Toiles pour Reverdy<\/em>(1969), Blancs<\/em>(1972-1974), and Tabulas<\/em>(from 1974). His paintings are starkly white or colorful, raw or delicate, geometrical or free-formed.<\/p>\n

Important retrospectives took place in Paris at the Centre Pompidou (2013) and the Mus\u00e9e National d\u2019Art Moderne de Paris (1976), and Hanta\u00ef represented France at the Venice Biennale in 1982. He withdrew from the artworld that same year. His work is held in many museum collections in France and abroad, including the MoMA (New York), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the Mus\u00e9es de Beaux-Arts of Grenoble, Marseille, Montpellier, Saint-Etienne, Brussels, etc.<\/p>\n
